The Best Underwear for Hot Weather and the Commute

Underwear that feels fine in October can be the worst thing you wear in July. The Central line at half eight does not care what brand is on your waistband. What matters on a hot day is what the fabric does with moisture, and most underwear handles it badly.

In short

Choose a fabric that moves moisture away from the skin and dries quickly, in a cut long enough to stop chafing. Cotton is the weakest option in heat. Bamboo viscose, modal and merino are the strongest.

Why most underwear fails in the heat

You sweat to cool down. That only works if the moisture can leave. Cotton absorbs it and holds it against you, so the fabric gets heavy, clings and stays damp for the rest of the journey. The discomfort people put down to the weather is usually the fabric.

What to look for

  • Moisture wicking. The fabric should pull moisture off the skin and spread it so it can evaporate.
  • Breathability. Air has to pass through. Dense, heavy knits trap heat.
  • Fast drying. If you get caught out on the walk to the station, you want to be dry by the time you sit down.
  • A leg that stays put. Chafing is worse in heat. A mid-thigh leg that does not ride up protects the inner thigh.
  • A waistband that lies flat. A rolled waistband traps heat and moisture where you least want it.

The fabrics, compared

Fabric In the heat Worth knowing
Cotton Absorbs moisture and holds it Comfortable when dry, heavy when damp
Polyester and nylon Dry quickly Can feel like sportswear under tailoring and tend to hold odour over time
Modal Soft and breathable A good option, close to bamboo in feel
Merino wool Regulates temperature well Excellent, expensive, and needs careful washing
Bamboo viscose Wicks moisture up to four times faster than cotton Soft, breathable, and carries up to 70% less bacteria

Does the cut matter?

Yes. Loose woven boxers let air move but bunch under trousers and do nothing for chafing. Trunks are short, so the leg tends to ride up when you walk. A boxer brief cut to mid-thigh covers the area that rubs and stays where you put it.
