Most men pick a cut once, at eighteen, and never revisit it. Boxers, briefs, boxer briefs and trunks are not interchangeable. Each one solves a different problem and creates a different one. Here is what separates them, who each suits, and how to choose.
The short answer
If you want support and no movement, wear boxer briefs or trunks. If you want airflow and a loose fit, wear boxers. If you want maximum support and no leg at all, wear briefs. For most men on a normal day, a boxer brief is the answer, and the fabric matters more than the cut.
Boxers
Loose, legged and unsupported. Boxers hang from the waistband, which gives you airflow and freedom, and gives the fabric room to bunch, twist and ride up under trousers. They suit sleeping, lounging and hot weather. They are the weakest choice under fitted trousers, for training or for a long day on your feet.
Briefs
Full coverage, high support and no leg. Briefs hold everything in place and leave nothing to ride up, which suits sport and anyone who wants a firm fit. The trade-offs are less airflow and a look many men no longer want. They sit under almost anything without showing.
Boxer briefs
The fitted cut with a leg, usually ending mid-thigh. Boxer briefs combine the support of briefs with the coverage of boxers, and the leg stops thighs rubbing on a long walk or a run. They are the default for men who want one cut for the desk, the gym and the weekend. The fit is only as good as the fabric and the waistband. A cheap boxer brief rolls and rides up like any other.
Trunks
Trunks are the UK name for a shorter boxer brief, with a leg that ends high on the thigh. They are fitted like a boxer brief with less fabric, which makes them lighter and cooler under shorts and swimwear. The shorter leg gives less anti-rub coverage, which matters if you walk or run a lot.
Side by side
| Boxers | Briefs | Trunks | Boxer briefs | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fit | Loose | Close, no leg | Close, short leg | Close, longer leg |
| Support | Low | High | Medium to high | Medium to high |
| Airflow | Highest | Lower | Medium | Medium |
| Rides up or rolls | Often | Rarely | Sometimes | Depends on the waistband |
| Under fitted trousers | Poor | Good | Good | Good |
| Anti-rub on the thigh | None | None | Little | Good |
Boxer briefs vs boxers
Boxer briefs stay put and give support. Boxers give airflow and freedom, but move and bunch. If your underwear ever rides up on the walk to the station, you want the boxer brief.
Trunks vs boxer briefs
The difference is leg length. Trunks stop high on the thigh and run cooler and lighter. Boxer briefs stop mid-thigh and cover more, which helps if your thighs rub. If you run or walk a lot, choose boxer briefs. If you wear shorts or want less fabric, choose trunks.
Which is best for the gym, work or sleep?
At the gym and for running, boxer briefs. They hold their position and cover enough of the thigh to prevent rubbing. At work, boxer briefs or trunks, which sit flat under tailoring. For sleeping, boxers, because airflow matters more than support. Most men do not need four cuts. They need one good one and one for bed.
The variable most men never change
Men who are unhappy with their underwear tend to try a new brand, a new cut or a new size. The fix that works is the fibre. 95% of boxers are cotton, and cotton holds moisture, takes on odour by the end of the day and loses its shape. Bamboo viscose wicks moisture up to four times faster than cotton, carries up to 70% less bacteria and holds its shape and softness wash after wash. Whichever cut you choose, it behaves better in a better fibre.
Where The Boxer Club fits
We make one cut. The Boxer Brief is a boxer brief in bamboo viscose, cut mid-thigh, with a flat anti-roll waistband, an ergonomic 3D pouch with anti-chafe panels and heat-sealed labels instead of tags. Black or white, S to XXL. If you want a shorter leg, that is a trunk, and it is not what we make. If you want bamboo boxers for men that stay put, this is the one.
